Background Research

The relationship between real world events, most notably tragic events, and associated company stocks often leads individuals far from the conflict to acquire gains off of others misfortune. Whether it is the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, or even shootings, how might we illustrate to users a moral perspective on the market and the world?

A catalyst for this project was a recent mass school shooting and the market’s reaction to it. While children’s lives were lost the firearm company Smith and Wesson and its investors experienced a huge spike in their stock.


There is no doubt of Covid’s impact on the economy, however throughout multiple industries investors benefitted from either specific investments or shorting stocks as they foresaw business going under and as more and more individuals became sick


Both the war in Ukraine and in Gaza by many is equally viewed as something distant yet still opportunistic in the market. Thematic investing does not leave out war in which to help investors take advantage of world events even if they are tragic
